Ways to Help

Texas White- Tail Deer

1. When is the white-tail hunting season in Texas?

The season varies by region, but it normally kicks off in the fall. Archery season opens first, followed by rifle season. The peak of deer activity—the rut—usually falls between November and early December.

2. What calibers or gear are most commonly used to hunt them?

For rifles, the most common choices are .270, .308, .30-06, or 6.5 Creedmoor.

For archery, hunters typically use compound bows with 400–500 grain arrows and broadheads with good penetration.

3. What are the best times of day to hunt them?

White-tailed deer move the most at sunrise and sunset, right when the buck gets on his feet.
Around midday they tend to bed down, unless it’s the rut and they’re chasing does.

4. How can you tell if a buck is mature?

A mature buck generally has:

A broader chest,

A thick neck,

Legs that appear shorter due to the heavier body,

A heavier antler frame with thicker bases.

5. At what average distance are shots taken?

On most Texas ranches, the average rifle shot is between 80 and 200 yards, depending on the terrain and the blind.
For archery, it’s typically 20–40 yards.

6. What type of clothing is recommended?

Comfortable clothing, thermal layers if it’s cold, and brush or woodland-type camouflage.
Always wear comfortable boots, and if you walk a lot, something lightweight.

7. Is it necessary to wear full camouflage?

For rifle hunting it’s not mandatory, but it helps.
For archery, it’s definitely recommended.
The important thing is to break up your silhouette and keep your scent as low as possible.

8. What types of blinds or stands are used?

Very common setups include:
Box blinds,
Tripods,
Ground blinds,
Tree stands in areas with more trees.
Most ranches place blinds near trails, feeders, or water sources.

9. How do bucks behave during the rut?

During the rut, they go crazy—marking territory, chasing does, and fighting. It’s the time when you can see the big ones come out during the day.

10. What is the best-tasting meat on a white-tail?

White-tail deer is delicious when handled properly. The most prized cuts are:
Backstrap,
Tenderloins,
The hind quarter for roasting or making jerky.
