Ways to Help

Mule Deer Chihuahua, México

1. When is the Mule Deer hunting season in Chihuahua?

The season varies according to state regulations, but it generally starts in the fall and ends in winter.

The peak of activity and the rut usually occurs in November and December, when bucks start following the does.

2. What calibers are most commonly used to hunt them?

For rifles, the most common are: .270, .308, .30-06, 7mm-08.
Medium to large calibers are also used for long-range shots.
For bows: compound bows with 400–500 grain arrows and broadheads with good penetration.
In short: “Any caliber that hits the vital zone cleanly works.”

3. What are the best times of day to see or hunt them?

Mule deer are crepuscular, moving mainly at dawn and dusk.
During the rut, they can be more active even during the day, especially bucks following does.

4. How can you identify a mature buck?

A mature buck usually shows:
A robust body with legs that appear shorter,
A thick neck, especially during the rut,
A broad chest,
Large antlers with well-defined bases.
If it looks like it dominates the area and doesn’t get easily spooked, it’s a good buck.

5. What is the average shooting distance?

In Chihuahua, with open terrain and hills:
Rifle: 100–300 meters
Bow: 20–40 meters, depending on cover and trails.

6. What clothing is recommended for hunting Mule Deer?

Comfortable and lightweight clothing for walking,
Thermal layers for cold mornings,
Camouflage in brush, woodland, or earth-tone colors,
Sturdy boots for mountainous terrain.

7. Is full camouflage necessary?

It’s not mandatory for rifles, but it helps you stay unnoticed, especially in open areas.
For bow hunting, it’s almost essential.
The key is to break your silhouette and manage your scent.

8. What types of blinds or stands are used?

Ground blinds among bushes,
Tripods on hillsides or open areas,
Tree stands where there is taller vegetation,
Rustic blinds near watering holes or feeders.

9. How do bucks behave during the rut?

They constantly follow does,
Mark territory with antlers and urine,
May fight other bucks,
Move more during the day, increasing your chances of seeing them.

10. What is the best meat from Mule Deer?

If handled properly, Mule Deer has very tasty meat. The most prized cuts are:
Backstrap,
Tenderloins,
Legs for roasting, steaks, or jerky.
